How To Prevent A Terrorist Attack
Terrorism is the deliberate and systematic assault on civilians to inspire fear for political ends.

This is an article from an Israeli who has great experience in the IDF special forces and border patrol. It may seem radical to talk about homicide bombers in America, and that is good. If it ever becomes a common topic of conversation, it will be because such bombings are common. Let's hope articles like this stay in the category of "just a bit whacky."

Some of the situations and tips given in the original did not apply very well here in the west, and I have edited it; a number of tips related to how Arabs may act just do not apply in the west as they might in Israel. This may not prevent a 9-11 type of attack, but it may help keep people from being hurt locally during this War With Terrorism.

When in war - act as if you are in war. By this we mean that each terrorist coming to America could bring death and destruction to us all. You should remind guards, from the airport to the bank to schools that they work not only to make money but also for the sake of their and our lives.

Not only people from abroad support terrorism. As it became public from Oklahoma City, those who live in America itself are also capable of it. Timothy McVeigh did not look at all Arab, and to think that terrorists are only "Arab-looking" may cause you to miss a good 'ol boy with a grudge.

So, how do you keep aware for possible terrorist trouble? Here are some suggestions; if your "spidey-sense" goes off, notify the authorities. Better safe than full of rat-poison covered shrapnel (a favored weapon of homicide mass muderers in Israel).

Draw the attention of the police if you notice suspicious persons or situations. It's better report one person or thing that is not dangerous than to miss one that is.

Pay attention to packets, bags, packages, backpacks, purses etc. lying on the ground abandoned, not moved by wind, and where you can't see what it is inside. Be particularly aware in areas where crowds gather and where such items are common - train and bus stations, airport waiting areas, gyms and the like.

Be alert to vehicles cruising areas that are not usually used for cruising. Places where teenagers gather may be cruising spots, as are airport pick up zones. However banks, hotels with parking or vehicle waiting areas, military installations, government buildings, hospitals and schools are less likely to attract vehicles repeatedly passing by. Be especially wary if the driver or passengers seem to be "scoping out" the area, taking notes or avoid eye contact.

Watch for suspicious persons and take action as outlined in the section The Nature of Assault.

If you work around food, in any phase of the supply chain from harvest or manufacturing through shipping to preparation and retailing, be aware of suspicious activities. There have been concerns about terrorist attack via the food supply. Just a little contamination can go a long way to sicken or kill people.

Some features that may help you distinguish potential terrorists/homicide bombers:

  • Clothing out of season.
  • Disproportionate contours of a body under clothes.
  • Difficult, awkward gait, as if something hidden under clothes hinders a person's mobility.
  • Hands periodically and unaccountably moved toward the chest or to a pocket; this may indicate a hidden detonation device.
  • A heavy bag, a backpack or rucksack located oddly high on the shoulders. Homicide bombers do this to target upper torsos and heads leading to a larger number of serious casualties.
  • While putting something down or picking something up a person squats down stiffly, or tries to do this and abandons the effort. While this may indicate simply a stiff back, it may also indicate movement hindered by a bomb vest worn around the waist.
  • In all cases, report anyone carrying a weapon in an inappropriate place, especially airports, train and bus stations, schools, hospitals and government buildings.
  • If you perceive what seems to be imminent danger, don't be shy of shouting and getting people alarmed enough to run off. If you are up to it, you might try to push a potential bad guy away either into a corner, a gutter or just to the ground in order to disrupt his actions or to reduce the adverse effects of a potential blast.
